  • NMB, CMC unveil five-tractor initiative for cashew industry

    Oct 26th, 2026

NMB Bank, in partnership with CMC Agri Limited, has launched a financial inclusion initiative for the 2026/27 cashew season, with five tractors earmarked as incentives for cooperative unions that meet specified deposit and transaction requirements. The initiative, dubbed *Korosho Yangu, Benki Yangu*, aims to encourage savings, deposit mobilisation and greater use of formal banking services across the cashew value chain. Launching the campaign in Mtwara, Regional Commissioner Colonel Donald Msengi said access to tractors could help address persistent transport challenges in rural cashew-producing areas, particularly where poor roads make it difficult to move agricultural inputs and harvested crops. He said the equipment could support the transportation of seeds, fertilisers and cashew nuts between farms and collection centres. The commissioner urged NMB to provide farmers and Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society (AMCOS) leaders with clear information about the campaign's eligibility conditions and the costs, interest rates and repayment terms associated with banking products. He also proposed that the bank explore financing arrangements that would enable cashew farmers to pay health insurance premiums before harvest and repay the funds after selling their produce. NMB Head of Agribusiness Nsolo Mlozi said the initiative provides for five tractors as conditional incentives for cooperative unions meeting the prescribed deposit and transaction requirements. Mlozi explained that the tractors could be used to transport cashew nuts from farms to warehouses, undertake crop spraying with tanks of up to 2,000 litres and support land preparation activities. He said the programme was intended to promote responsible financial management while supporting agricultural productivity and operational efficiency. CMC Agri Limited Tanzania Manager Stuart Leishman said the adoption of modern agricultural machinery, including New Holland tractors, could improve productivity and strengthen the agricultural sector. MAMCU Cooperative Union Chairman Alhaji Azam Mfaume welcomed the initiative, saying it could encourage cooperatives to make greater use of banking services while improving access to mechanised farming equipment. The initiative is expected to strengthen the use of formal financial services throughout the cashew value chain, with the tractor incentives subject to the campaign's applicable terms and eligibility requirements.
