  • IAM prepares technicians for a new integrated cashew tree management model.

    Feb 11th, 2026

The Mozambique Almond Institute (IAM, IP) held a training seminar this Wednesday, February 11th, in Maputo, aimed at preparing its technicians for the new Integrated Cashew Management (MIC) model, framed within the Cashew Value Chain Development Program (PDC 2025 – 2034). The initiative aims to equip technicians with the necessary technical and operational knowledge for the correct implementation of the new model. The seminar was attended by members of the Board of Directors, technicians, and the Maputo Provincial Delegation, who were introduced to the program's objectives and the approach to the cashew value chain as an integrated system. At the opening of the meeting, the Director-General of IAM, IP, Ilídio Bande, emphasized the importance of replicating the seminar in the provincial delegations to ensure the training of all technicians and the harmonization of presentation techniques. He also highlighted the creation of support groups to assist the provinces in the effective implementation of the program. Among the expected results are improved understanding of the program, mastery of its operation, and clear alignment of the roles of each stakeholder. In turn, facilitator Mateus Comé clarified that IAM, IP will be responsible for the technical component of the program, including implementation and on-site monitoring, while the financial component will be managed by the participating Financial Institutions. The program will be implemented nationwide, respecting the specificities of each province and district. During the seminar, the roles of each stakeholder in the program were discussed, as well as the main diseases and pests affecting cashew trees, and the transition process from the current pesticide package to the integrated package of the new PDC model called the "Basket of Options." For the current campaign, the spraying of more than 12 million cashew trees is planned, with chemical treatment according to the new MIC approach scheduled for the period between June and September of this year. One of the main challenges identified is defining the prices that agro-dealers will apply to producers and establishing effective control mechanisms. The goal is to guarantee the protection of producers and avoid pricing practices that could compromise the sustainability of cashew production in the country.
