  • Mozambique Breaks Cashew Production Record Again

    Jul 21st, 2025

The cashew nut value chain has shown remarkable growth in recent seasons as a result of a series of reforms implemented by the Government. Mozambique has reached a significant milestone in the 2024–2025 cashew nut marketing season, with the sale of approximately 195,400 tonnes, a figure approaching the historic record of 200,000 tonnes achieved in the 1970s, when the country led global cashew production. According to official data, the cashew value chain in Mozambique has been showing notable growth in recent seasons due to a set of reforms carried out by the Government. Among the various measures, a key one was the upward revision of the purchase price for raw cashew nuts in the current season, set at 45 meticais per kilogram, an increase of 10 meticais compared to the previous harvest. In addition, the joint efforts of stakeholders in the sector have led to a significant increase in cashew tree planting, reflected in rising production levels in recent years. Alongside these factors, and according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the national processing industry — with a potential capacity of 110,000 tonnes — has been recovering and regaining previous growth levels. Speaking to Economia & Mercado magazine, the Provincial Director of Agriculture and Fisheries of Maputo, Paulo Cossa, explained that the current cashew value chain involves 1.4 million producers, 69 companies, and 7,287 workers nationwide, highlighting the sector’s socio-economic importance for rural areas. “In the past two decades, Mozambique has invested in revitalising the cashew sector through technical support to producers, rehabilitation of processing factories, and improved access to markets. After a sharp decline in the post-independence period due to armed conflict, the sector has been gradually recovering, driven by joint initiatives between the State and the private sector,” the official added. He further stressed that for the Mozambican government, cashew nuts are seen as “a strategic crop aimed at diversifying exports, promoting food security, and creating jobs, particularly in rural areas where it remains one of the main sources of household income.” Additionally, the government views the recent signing of an agreement between Mozambique and China as a new opportunity for cashew exports to the Chinese market. “This agreement is seen as an important window of opportunity for producers, processors, and exporters, with the potential to bring direct benefits by expanding commercialization opportunities.” However, the current challenge lies in improving the quality and promoting Mozambican cashew kernels to enhance their competitiveness in the international market.
