  • From cashew to sun: an Ivorian thesis puts Côte d'Ivoire on the map of renewable energy

    Jul 17th, 2025

In Amiens, France, a young Ivorian researcher presented a major breakthrough during his thesis defense on July 11, 2025: natural cashew and bissap pigments to boost the efficiency of photovoltaic cells. A scientific feat that propels Côte d'Ivoire onto the world map of renewable energies, and opens the way to energy sovereignty based on local resources. At the Université de Picardie Jules Verne in Amiens, before an international jury, Mr. Assohoun Roméo Fulgence KRAIDY unveiled research that could well reshape the continent's energy future: the use of natural pigments extracted from cashew bark and bissap flowers (Hibiscus sabdariffa) to improve the performance of dye-sensitized photovoltaic cells (DSSCs). In Ivory Coast, which is rolling out mega-solar projects in Boundiali, Katiola, and Korhogo, this thesis opens an unexpected avenue: growing the energy of tomorrow in our orchards and fields. And the results are inspiring: yields of up to 10% with cashews, 9% with bissap—unheard of using natural materials in this solar technology. This work is the result of exemplary scientific cooperation between the Félix Houphouët-Boigny University in Abidjan and the University of Picardie Jules Verne. On the Ivorian side, the project was led by Professor Yapi Abé, with Professors Yaovi Gagou and Mimoun El Marssi on the French side. The decisive support of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, under the direction of Minister Adama Diawara, and the dynamism of Professor Yao Rita Kakou, a key figure in the Ministry of Technical Education and Vocational Training, were decisive. Professor Ballo Zié, President of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny University, did not fail to welcome this scientific breakthrough which raises our university to the rank of the most advanced African institutions in the field of renewable energies.
