  • Ghana cashew processors warn of sector collapse

    Jul 11th, 2025

The Association of Cashew Processors Ghana (ACPG) raises concerns over the potential collapse of Ghana's cashew processing sector, emphasizing threats to the national 24-hour economy concept. As per a statement by ACPG President, António Manuel Caramelo Raposo, policy neglect, raw material shortages, and inadequate state backing propel the crisis, risking a national employment issue. The ACPG highlights the influx of foreign merchants, who offer elevated prices for Raw Cashew Nuts (RCN), thus diverting resources from local processors. The association states, "This unsustainable practice distorts the market, undermines the national value-addition agenda, and threatens the long-term viability of Ghana's cashew sector." Currently, many ACPG members face operational shutdowns or downsizing, with secondary processors struggling as primary processing falters. The situation evolves from an industry-specific challenge to a broader economic and employment issue, endangering jobs, especially among rural youth and women dependent on cashew processing. Despite policies intended to assist the local processing industry, enforcement appears inadequate. The ACPG claims, "The sector continues to suffer from a policy vacuum," urging media and civil society to demand accountability from policymakers. Ghana's cashew sector, a major non-traditional export, reportedly receives less government focus compared to sectors like cocoa, hindering wider industrialization and export goals. ACPG calls for urgent governmental measures, such as emergency raw materials, low-interest capital, tax reliefs, and utility subsidies. It says, "Action is needed and fast." The Association stresses the need for public awareness, quoting, "Many Ghanaians remain unaware that a vital local industry is collapsing before their eyes," and seeks media support to catalyze citizen and governmental action. ACPG affirms its readiness to collaborate with authorities to foster reform and investments.
